Let Lys and Met take care of Cow instead of a Vet (59(b)th 16 to 30 April, 2018)

Dear friends,

Last fortnight saw a lot of developments in eastern regional dairy development in India with Comfed in Bihar opening up 6 of its plant and Oddisha joining hands with NDDB to increase milk production.

Amul again shared its growth plan with an intent to set up dairy plants in Nepal and Dubai. It would certainly help Nepalese dairy industry to get more formalized and Nepalese farmers to gain more. When we entered Nepal for the first time as a dairy service providers way back in 1994, then it was DANIDA a Danish development agency which was supporting Nepalese dairy sector and with one of their associate organization DTD ( Danish Turnkey Dairies) a large number of dairy plants were set up and expanded in Nepal. DANIDA was working very closely with NDDB Nepal at that time.

Investments in startups linked to dairy sector is pouring in well with Happy cows mustering Rs 4 Crores from angel investors. Big Basket also is planning to invest in milk basket and Daily Ninja, the start ups in fresh food products distribution including whole range of milk and milk products .

Maharashtra with majority of milk being handled by the private sector is still unable to do justice to the farmers demand of getting a reasonable price for their produce. Some of the farmers have now decided to sell their milk free instead, from May 3rd. I think it is high time for government to develop a long term strategy for farmers from Maharashtra including dairy farmers to get justice to their demands on sustainability and growth.

Now let us talk about the title of this mail. The title simply says that "Let Lysine and Methionine as essential Amino Acid look after the animal rather than a veterinarian doctor on day to day basis"

There are six areas of distinct benefits which these Amino Acids brings in , namely

1. Enhanced milk performance independent of production levels
2. Decrease metabolic disorders incidence.
3. Improved dairy herd fertility
4. Increased cheese production profitability
5. Improved efficiency of metabolized protein use thus getting same yield with lesser crude protein in diet
6. Essential role played in energy metabolism for productivity and

These  amino acids may help both in more milk production and more SNF in milk which is a common problem in farmer's sustainability and growth.

Currently most of the feed millers as well as farmers have a perception that more the protein in feed , the better it would be for their milk. While the reality is that our animals are highly protein overfed through cattle feed in most of the cases ( due to both quantity and quality of protein source being used).

This initiative by Kemin to help farmer start taking control on their animal's performance and simultaneously keeping a track on its   health (lower SCC) and reproductive system is commendable and we also plan to develop some programs with them to be implemented at farmers's interface.

Happy e learning

with best regards
