SNF has a new meaning in India now: Work in progress (31st DP 1 to 15 Feb)

Dear friends,

Last fortnight has shown true colors of Indian polity. Starting with Budget 2017, Election in 5 states and action packed drama in South. Till 13th March hardly anyone iwould be  interested in reading whatever I try to say. So instead of providing you with in depth analysis of what's in this budget for dairy industry ( which partly we covered in our last edition also) , I am taking you to a different new world of initiatives for providing Safe and Nutritious food for all.

This initiative taken by FSSAI has a multidimensional approach. I would like to make you aware of 3 of them from dairy sector point of view.

National Milk Quality Survey 2016 is coming almost to an end and very soon we shall be sharing the detailed news on the same once we will have results declared by the regulator. This survey has covered almost whole of the country and samples from different sources were picked up and tested in state of the art technology laboratory with an inclusive approach. This could be considered as a first step towards making Safe milk monitoring a nationwide movement in times to come.

Fortification of milk has come out to be as a second big initiative from FSSAI and last fortnight saw global stakeholders visiting FSSAI and meeting Mr Pawan Agarwal to become part of this largest drive for a paradigm shift in the way nutrition is ensured at the root level for such a huge demography.

Using Organic labels is in vogue now. I am not sure of other food products but for dairy it is almost a 3 year activity (if the process is followed up religiously). Still we find that a large number of players around metros are writing Organic in front of their milk products. There is no single agency which could actually prove or disprove the authenticity of the tall claim made by these players. FSSAI has again planned an action plan to bring Organic labeling also under its lens.

Still a news related to seizure of Ghee stock of one of the known National brand because Pure ghee was written on the same is a matter of concern. I request regulator to please look into it as in the current Indian scenario of adulterated or imitation products (particularly in cream, butter, cheese and ghee category ), writing Pure is a necessity to differentiate yourself from others and building trust with the consumers.

So next time when you read SNF as a dairy man then don't get confused as it could be Safe and Nutrition Food also.

Happy e reading and enjoy the national festival of Indian democracy i.e the elections.

with best regards
